Name of the initiative: Nextbike
Organisation form: For Profit Organisation
Domain: Sustainable mobility
Starting year: 2012
Keywords: public bike sharing system
Nextbike is a local initiative offering a public bike sharing system in Cyprus using the latest technology of SmartBikes. Founded in 2012 in Limassol, Nextbike has gradually expanded to other cities on the island of Cyprus, with several municipalities participating in this network.
The aim of Nextbike is to provide an inexpensive and environmental-friendly means of transportation for point-to-point distances to the local community, visitors and tourists.
First-time users need to register on the website or through the Nextbike app. Activation of the account is automatically done once the payment details of the customer is entered. Customers may pay through paypal or using credit cards, while recently the company made available vouchers at designated kiosks to allow customers to top-up their Nextbike accounts. Upon confirming the payment method, the customer will be charged 10€ for verification purposes that will be credited to the customer as a starting credit. The payment method can be changed by the customer at any time.
Rentals and returns can be made at designated stations or in designated free float areas without charge. Customers can park their bikes without ceasing the rental and manually lock the bike once it is returned. Also, the app may be easily updated when bikes are returned so the next customer can unlock the Nextbike to take a ride.
