Urban Lab Wolfsberg
Name of the initiative: Stadtwerkstatt Wolfsberg
Organisation form: Non Profit Organisation
Domain: Shared spaces
Starting year: 2016
Keywords: Space Sharing, Urban Activism
Stadtwerkstatt Wolfsberg was established in 2016 as part of a project that encouraged the citizens to participate in the redesign of the public space in the city centre and to improve the quality of life in the inner city.
As in many other cities, the center of the city was characterized by passing and parking cars and vacant shops. With the Stadtwerkstatt, a space was created in a vacant space where working groups can work on different ideas for revitalising the city centre and where other initiatives can find a space for their activities.
From the beginning, the Stadtwerkstatt was designed for an interim use: the furniture is flexible and can therefore be used in different vacant locations.
In the meantime, the Stadtwerkstatt is now in its third vacant location, as successful permanent rentals have been initiated in each case through interim use.
Over the years, various successful initiatives have been developed:
- Die Stadtmacher: art and culture in vacancies
- Repair-Cafe: Joint repair of equipment
- Book box: Old telephone boxes for book exchange
- The Green Kitchen: pop-up kitchen in public space.
The Stadtwerkstatt is an example of a lively Urban Lab where collaborative urban development can take place in the 21st century.
